QUEER 03:42
theres so much pressure from my gay friends to not like boys because they suck so much and if i did i'd be pretending to like girls even in my own community it hurts and sometimes it is all in my head and theres no pressure from anyone to be a real queer and not stray from our norm so many years of struggle and strife and ive been blind who to believe, who to doubt its hard to figure out with all these words and definitions that people make based on their own experience its hard for me to know where i fall without being insensitive its not that theyre sensitive i just dont get it and maybe it is cause im so young ive developed a tendency to go dumb in the head and numb myself to persecution because ive only known pillows on my bed so many years of struggle and strife and ive been blind who to believe, who to doubt its hard to figure out so many years of struggle and strife and ive been for the most part blind leave it to me to pussy out and never really help so many years of struggle and strife and ive been blind who to believe, who to doubt its hard to figure out

about

This EP is meant to be an exploration into my self-identity - funnily enough, something I don't often explore in my music, despite the deeply personal nature of songwriting in general. I find it far easier to write about fantasies or about other people than myself - a fact which, to my closest friends, may seem counterintuitive, because I never shut up about myself in conversations. I chose three aspects of my self-identity that I find are deeply intertwined with me and with each other to discuss in this EP - my mental illness, my sexuality, and my age. Hopefully, the relationship between each of these aspects is explored thoroughly within the songs, although not completely, as there are only four. However, the greatest challenge for me in writing and recording this EP was not trying to address complex subject material, but rather the expedited time process - I've never put together a full cohesive album, and to do so in a matter of approximately a week and a half was a major challenge. Accordingly, the lyrics and the production value are little less high quality, but in my opinion this only adds to the personal nature of the subject matter.

The cover of this album - a selfie - is meant to reflect these themes of introspection, because it is quite literally a reflection of one's self, taken by one's self - just like, I think, this EP. The parentheses in the title mirror this theme as well, because they enclose the raw and blunt nature of the title in the same way that many of us enclose ourselves from those around us.

With each song, I've included a description detailing the musical inspiration behind the track - so be sure to click on each track for a description, along with lyrics, and the playlist from my spotify that I feel best encompasses my musical inspiration for that song. This project is as much about my relationship with music as it is my relationship with myself and with others. Music is a considerable part of my self-identity, and always has been - it has informed my relationship with my parents, with my peers, and even how I understand and share my own emotions with the outside world. Thus, I felt it just as important and necessary to discuss where I was coming from musically, especially considering the challenge producing and creating a cohesive album posed.
